REP. TOM CAMPBELL'S KICK-OFF FOR CONGRESS

Representative Tom Campbell
Photo from Representative Campbell's official website

Rep. Tom Campbell officially kicked-off his campaign for the 9th District's Congressional seat, which is up for election in 2010. The kick-off was held at Pioneer Park Pavilion in Puyallup Friday evening, June 5th and was attended by almost 100 people, strong supporters of Rep. Campbell's bid to serve our district in Washington, D. C.. The evening included complimentary hors d'oerves, drinks, silent auction, prizes, entertainment and music. And, of course, the opportunity to show support for Tom by making a donation or pledge!

The highlight of the festivities included a kick-off speech by Rep. Campbell that clearly demonstrated his love, passion and enthusiasm for public service. Calling himself a proud military man who served his country, he said that actions and deeds are everything to him, and not touting the Party line (Rep. Campbell is a registered Republican). Campbell said he votes his mind using strict moral principles as his guide. Campbell stated that his word means everything to him and when he gives his word to his constituents, they can expect him to do everything within his ability to deliver, as he has aptly proven since his public service began in 1993.

While Rep. Campbell said he would miss the district when elected, he feels the time is right to take his talents East to represent us in the U. S. Capitol. Campbell said he honors and respects the Constitution and he is ready to defend this document's values against those in the Federal government that have lost sight of their oath to support the precepts laid down by wise people several hundred years ago. That comment brought the collective to a thunderous, standing ovation.
Rep. Campbell and his wife Lynn radiated joy and wonder on what they are about to embark.

A cross-section of the district was in attendance, including Democratic Party Precinct Committee Officers from Yelm and Rainier out in force supporting Campbell's kick-off. The glaring absence were any officials from the City of Yelm. After all, Rep. Campbell's efforts have been key in the State Legislature funding Yelm's Bypass. Without his persistence, influence and efforts, there would be no Bypass funding. This writer was quite surprised that not one City of Yelm official was there to lend support to Rep. Campbell's Congressional bid.

THE YELM COMMUNITY BLOG WISHES REP. CAMPBELL AND HIS WIFE LYNN WELL IN THEIR ENDEAVORS SEEKING OUR DISTRICT'S CONGRESSIONAL SEAT!

JEANMARIE CHRISTENSON'S UNIQUE AUCTION TO RETIRE CAMPAIGN DEBT

Former LD District 2 Rep. Candidate JeanMarie Christenson with Gov. Chris Gregoire

"As newly-elected officials prepare to take office, candidates who weren’t elected are scrambling to cover campaign debts.

The Committee to Elect JeanMarie Christenson held an online auction last week to help pay the remaining debt from her campaign.

Proceeds went to cover campaign expenses incurred during the campaign.

On Dec. 10, Christenson posted a debt of $1,802.11 to the Public Disclosure Commission, or PDC.

That debt is listed as a loan to herself.

Candidates who weren’t elected have until Wednesday, Dec. 31 to take in contributions, PDC officials said...

Thirty-two items were up for auction, donated by individuals and local businesses. Items included a lime green color scheme gift basket valued at $45, a hand-made quilt valued at $800, a gourmet soy candle valued at $18, Shaklee Basics Essential Vita Strips valued at $45 and an evening of storytelling and song valued at $150.

Christenson’s 2008 campaign raised more than $19,000," quoting the NVN.

A NOTE TO YELM BUSINESS OWNERS

NVN Editor/Publisher Graves called my letter last week a threat to local business owners and said "that kind of talk smacks of schoolyard bullying and has no place in an otherwise healthy, open dialogue".

I assert that Mr. Graves is the true schoolyard bully by printing on the front page such divisive comments from a city official about his alleged RSE experiences over 18 years ago.
That's news?
That deserves a front-page story?
Where was the story about the City of Yelm being a Thurston County Superior Court defendant on Oct. 1st about water availability for homes and businesses here. Why does that not merit NVN coverage on which the outcome WILL affect this area? Why was their reporter not in the courtroom, yet writing about Cunningham's video instead? HMMM!

1. Newspaper reader Roy Johnson wrote the NVN last week and said,
"I don't know about the rest of the population in our fine little village of Yelm, but if Knight/Ramtha devotees such as (former Yelm mayor candidate) Steve Klein and (legislative candidate) JeanMarie Christenson expect my support, they have a long wait coming.

Am I really to believe that these politicians have the common sense and brains to lead our community when they got suckered into believing this Ramtha story is true?"

Mr. Johnson, Glen Cunningham is a former, elected City Council member & RSE student. And, a current & several former RSE students are in elected or appointed positions now serving our community.

If this community is going to judge those who wish to serve the public because of their association with Ramtha's School, then how can Cunningham's views, interactions and associations with others be overlooked as being without influence, either?
Can his derogatory views about RSE be separated from his role as President-elect of the Yelm Chamber of Commerce or any other public post in which he serves?

2. As an example, as President-elect of the Yelm Chamber of Commerce, shouldn't Cunningham be the representative of ALL Chamber members? Why is the Chamber's President-elect condemning ANY Chamber member, especially long-time Patron Member RSE, when he is quoted by the NVN saying, '..he [Cunningham] warns people how it is so they “don’t waste their money' [by going to RSE]"?
Is this kind of behavior towards a local business and it's patrons not schoolyard bullying?

Bottom line: There was NO intent on my part to hurt any business, rather to expose the hypocrisy of a city official and support of the local newspaper.

You can't have it both ways!

[My letter to the NVN is printed under comments below for those that did not see it in the NVN.]

FOUR CANDIDATES HAVE PROGRESSED TO THE NOVEMBER BALLOT - ALL FEMALE!

Candidates for State Representative JeanMarie Christenson, Congress Darcy Burner, State Senator Marilyn Rasmussen, Governor Chris Gregoire.

Clearly Western Washington has finally broken through the "glass ceiling" and voted their minds for candidates to represent them based on talent, rather than gender bias, as demonstrated by these four ladies who were winners in their respective races in the State's top two Primary August 19th. They move on to the November election ballot.

GUEST ENTRIES: TWO LOCALS CONNECT WITH GOVERNOR & SENATOR

Jean Handley with Yelm's Timberland Librarian Kristin Blalack

GUEST ENTRY FROM AREA RESIDENT JEAN HANDLEY

"In this long season of campaigning I thought this quirky encounter would bring some joviality:

Doing my gig at Costco Saturday [Aug. 2] I spotted Gov. Chris Gregoire. I got up my chutzpa and introduced myself to her. She took my outstretched hand. I said, "Governor, I am Jean Handley and I am voting for JeanMarie Christenson."

I quickly went on to say, as I was on the Costco time clock, that I had been wanting to send her an email since the last winter's big storms. I told her that I like many others were glued to the radio during the outages. The only time I heard about her was days later. I told her that I believed she was behind her desk working but that she didn't show herself until the tour in Woodinville. She immediately replied that she was in Chehalis every day. I said good... you learned. Next time... get on the radio. I don't care if you are listing Red Cross shelters. People are eager to listen to leadership.

She leaned in replying, "Well said." Then I went back to work."

GUEST ENTRY FROM AREA RESIDENT MELODY RAE

"Dear Ms. Rae:

...
Thank you for contacting me regarding voter registration services to veterans. I appreciate hearing from you.

Senator Patty Murray

From Ms. Rae:
Dear Senator Murray:

Thanks for asking about Yelm. Actually we are in a battle over the Thurston Highlands project of several hundred new homes. This project appears to be being pushed through without thought to the environmental consequences of having that many new people on land that has not been proven ready to sustain that kind of a load. The environmental impact report far exceeds the page limit set forth by State law and it is not written in plain language. Those of us in the area are very concerned as we all have wells that supply the water to our homes Yet this information, so important to our lives and land, is inaccessible.
The traffic in Yelm, as you may be aware, is quite congested because new building has already advanced far beyond the capacity of our current roadways. Those involved with the Thurston Highlands project have suggested cutting through private lands for "easy access." Most of us moved out here for the quiet of the country. Others who have lived here all of their lives are watching commerce trounce their homeland.
There are many suburban type subdivisions already built here and they are not selling well. The whole idea of another one troubles the community greatly.
If this could be investigated by anyone in your office, my neighbors and I would be most grateful.

I thank you as always for your service on our behalf.

Warmest regards,
Melody Rae

SLOWER TAX COLLECTIONS SPURS GOVERNOR'S HIRING FREEZE

LD District 2 Rep. Candidate JeanMarie Christenson with Gov. Chris Gregoire

"Gov. Chris Gregoire ordered an immediate hiring freeze in state agencies this morning that is designed to save $90 million over the next fiscal year.

Gregoire’s included a clampdown on out-of-state travel, purchases of equipment and signing of personal service contracts - with exceptions made for emergencies...

The call to freeze was spurred by slowing tax collections.

'We've been watching it closely. The thing that triggered action now was the collection decrease for June … that came out in mid-July. We are seeing there is a slowdown in collections,' Kuper said [Gregoire's budget spokesman Glenn Kuper]. 'That was the primary motivation for acting now.'

Under the June forecast, the state was predicted to have $800 million in reserves at the end of the two year budget cycle on June 30, 2009. But Senate budget experts have predicted that a shortfall of $2.7 billion is developing for the 2009-11 cycle — leaving a net gap of $2 billion if the $800 million is applied. The $800 million includes money put into a special voter-approved "rainy day" fund," quoting The Olympian.

The Center on Budget & Policy Priorities reports 29 out of 50 states with budget shortfalls, Washington is not one of them.

THE CITY OF YELM SHOULD BEWARE!

Slower tax collections from lower property values on those being sold, the dried-up real estate market (slow sales reduces tax income) and retail sales tax revenue declines. While Yelm's retail sales figures are up over last year, that is mostly due to Wal-Mart and a few other businesses opening within the last year and that should be taken into account. Several high-profile businesses in Yelm have also closed. Energy prices have essentially doubled within the year and road construction costs have ballooned.

All of these things should be strongly considered as the City Council approaches the 2009 budget process this Fall!

UPDATED August 11:
* The PEW Center graded WA. with an A for performance in managing public resources.

* Gov. Gregoire's web page with a link to the Forbes article about WA being the 3rd best state in which to do business.

CHRISTENSON ANNOUNCES DEMOCRATIC PARTY'S NOMINATION OF HER FOR LD2 STATE REP

JeanMarie Christenson

Quoting LD2 Candidate Christenson's campaign:

JeanMarie Christenson overwhelmingly wins LD2's Democratic Nomination for State Representative.

JeanMarie Christenson won Legislative District 2's Democratic nomination for State Representative at the Nominating Convention in Graham, May 19th, outpacing her opponents.
Christenson's resounding 128-weighted votes reflected Party confidence.

The official tally: Christenson 128, Harper 26, Collins 27.

In addition to her being the Democratic Party's officially nominated candidate, JeanMarie was pleased to announce her endorsement by the LD2 Democrats.

Christenson's persuasive speech expressed her fine track record of preparedness, effort, dedication, knowledge, and experience. JeanMarie helped answer questions about the technicalities of the nominating process, and her understanding of both State and local issues was clearly demonstrated.

With her campaign now in high gear, JeanMarie has strong momentum. Christenson is quoted as saying, "I will continue to dedicate myself, and work diligently for all the folks in our District and State, to help make sure everyone has a future worth walking into."

The Tacoma News Tribune's Joe Turner penned a brief story and has a public comment section on his newspaper blog.

GUEST ENTRY: BETTYE JOHNSON ON CONGRESSMAN SMITH'S ADVISORY COUNCIL

LD District 2 Candidate JeanMarie Christenson with Rep. Adam Smith and Bettye Johnson

On Monday, January 14, I attended U.S. Congressman Adam Smith's Advisory Council meeting. I have been invited to attend these periodic meetings for over two years. Smith invites individuals from various
communities in his district and from my observation gets a good cross-representation. Usually there are less than 24 attending. This day the room held between 40 and 50 people.

I noted badges being worn for Obama, Edwards and also to impeach Bush and Cheney. Smith began the meeting by telling us that very little progress had been made in 2007, but he was not discouraged.
Yes, the Democrats hold a slim majority and at the beginning of 2007 the Republicans were filled with rhetoric. Even though the Congress passed bills, the President vetoed them and when the bills were sent back to the Senate for a two-thirds majority vote to override, the Republicans voted with the President. So much for rhetoric.

There were a variety of questions asked and addressed and of course the main topic was the war in Iraq. Smith voted for cutting off funding, however the President vetoed the bill. Smith prefers to have a bill that will not just cut off funding, but also bring the troops home. He is against a permanent base in Iraq.

One man stood up and asked those attending if we were in favor of impeachment. I would say that approximately 95 percent of those attending raised their hands approving. This sent a big message to
Smith who has said before that he is against impeachment because he feels it would divide the country and that it would do more harm than good.

My assessment is that Smith is doing the best that he can under the circumstances. If more Democrats were elected in both the Senate and the House, then there would be more muscle-power to override the President's vetoes. Smith said that he always likes to receive emails from his constituents and they do count. He is pro-environment and he is for using alternative fuels.

Smith is voting for the return of the paper ballot and he spoke extensively about the monies raised for national election candidates and the primary loop-hole is the open-ended donations party caucuses are allowed to receive. I suggest people become interested in their local party caucuses. This is where
the real power is.

YELM TO BE SITE OF DEMOCRATS PRE-CAUCUS FORUM TONIGHT

LD District 2 Candidate JeanMarie Christenson with Gov. Chris Gregoire

Candidate for State Representative JeanMarie Christenson
will be hosting a
Pre-Caucus Forum - January 17 In Yelm

THE PUBLIC IS INVITED TO ATTEND.

"This year, precinct caucuses won't include an opportunity to discuss or vote on possible platform planks or resolutions. However, building an effective party platform is still an important activity. It’s the one chance we have every couple of years to clearly articulate our values, defining who we are and what we stand for.

Therefore, in an effort to provide opportunities for discussion and participation, we will offer a series of “pre-caucus forums” throughout the county, and, since it’s a presidential election year, we’ll be doing straw polls to determine preferred candidates at each forum.

We hope you’ll take advantage of these opportunities to discuss issues important to you in preparation for the upcoming election cycle," quoting Ms. Christenson.

CHRISTENSON ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR STATE LEGISLATURE IN 2008

Jean Marie Christenson with WA. Gov. Christine Gregoire

"Dear Friends,

I am running for State Representative of District 2, which
includes most of Thurston and Pierce Counties.
While campaigning I have often been asked:
"What does a State Legislative Representative do?"
Here is my answer: "Representatives make the State's laws."
When I am elected and you contact your local
Representative to tell them how you want them to vote,
will be the person you will be speaking with.

JeanMarie Christenson.

JeanMarie is committed to creating more jobs, preserving civil liberties, the protection of our environment, and the freedoms insured by our Constitution for all Americans.

JeanMarie supports education, schools and teachers, remembering that our future lies with our children.

JeanMarie desires to protect the environment by finding new alternative energy solutions, capitalizing on renewable resources in our own district, and actively participating in developing these local commodities and assets.

JeanMarie encourages rural and agricultural economic vitality with domestic food production.

JeanMarie requires fiscal accountability with the wise use of taxpayer dollars, " quoting her website.

"JeanMarie Christenson, a Democrat who ran for the Legislature in 2006, is among the first to announce she’s running again.

She announced last week she’s taking another run at incumbent Rep. Jim McCune, R-Graham, in the 2nd Legislative District.

Christenson, 59, is a personal growth counselor who lives between Rainier and Yelm. Last year, she won 43.5 percent of the vote to McCune’s 56.5 percent.

She said she got a late start last year, and has been told she’ll need an early start and $100,000 to even have a chance at winning a legislative race in 2008.

Her campaign can be contacted at 360-446-5620 or at jeantalk@fairpoint.net," quoting Tacoma News Tribune's Joe Turner's blog on October 31, 2007.

Today I am sharing with you about a meeting I had with Fire Chief Rita Hutchenson in regard to the upcoming Levi for Fire District 4, and some of the brainstorming ideas that came out of our meeting.

Fire Chief Rita Hutcheson has done a stellar job of championing her cause on behalf of the Fire Department. I don't think any Candidate-for-office could say they were out more than Rita enlisting support for issues. I shared with Rita that I would like to see a more affective way to bring funds to our Fire District then have been traditionally used. I would like to get away from a bandaide approach and see if we could find more long term solutions.

Listed here are some of the ideas I've been thinking about and shared with Rita at our meeting:

(1) The Lottery was originally presented to the voters as a means to support schools. In the end however, the money was not used specifically for schools but instead went into the General Fund.

Question: Are Fire Districts able to tap into that fund, or make application in some way to be supported by that fund?

(2) Developers and impact fees: Developers should be helping to relieve the stress brought by their projects to the local area with impact fees substantial enough to absorb this burden, including that on Fire Districts. It is my understanding that impact fees are used by the Fire Department for equipment only...but wouldn't that be a substantial help when we are taking about tens/hundreds of thousands of dollars in needed equipment?

(3) Could City, County, District and State General Funds all help?

(4) I asked Rita if different Fire Districts supported each other? It seems to me a system of Sister-Districts (like certain cities have sister-cities) could be helpful because not every Fire District is short of funding, and some are actually quite flush. The Brotherhood and Sisterhood of Districts could be supporting each other, or perhaps there could even be a Statewide Fire-District-General-Fund?

(5) Of course, individual contributions, and local events to raise money for the Fire Department are always fun, and a great way to get citizens involved directly at the same time.

(6) Also, with the numerous projects the Capital Budget helps to fund, could some money be allocated from that source? Certainly local Fire Department facilities could greatly benefit from Capital Budget funding.

(7) And, it seems to me, the single most helpful thing that could happen for Fire District 4 is a 24 hour Medical Emergency
Facility in Yelm or Rainier. 80% of our Fire District's funds are spent on response to Medical and Health Care urgencies/emergencies.

If the burden were taken off of the funding needed to respond to these situations with a local Medical Emergency Facility, those funds would be freed up for other Fire District needs ... and again...we are talking about 80% of Fire District 4's available budget. I know Representative Tom Campbell has supported the idea of a Medical Emergency Facility in our area for some time, and I think it is time we step forward and ask the State to fund this project.

While it is clear that Fire District 4's need for funding is immediate I feel we should additionally look for long term support systems and resolutions that will work into the future. I know that Fire Chief Hutcheson agrees.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

JeanMarie Christenson

DEMOCRATS HAVE NEW PRECINCT COMMITTEE OFFICER IN YELM

Louise Oliverio

Louise Oliverio, who has been Thurston County Democrats' Precinct Committee Officer Proxy (PCO Proxy) in Yelm for Tim Lancaster over the last year, was recently confirmed as Yelm's newest PCO when the boundary lines for Precincts in the area were changed last month, and Tim Lancaster found himself no longer a resident within the boundary of Precinct 702 #2.

Louise Oliverio is a dynamic local author, mother of 3, and grandmother of 4. She has lived in the Yelm area for 18 years.

Louise has been an involved political action volunteer for years in both Yelm City and Thurston County, giving her time to support the Nisqually Land Trust, and attend and participate in the Thurston County Democrats' various events, including Lakefair Burger Booth, in addition to her volunteer work and support of former Candidate JeanMarie Christenson in her '06 campaign for State Representative.

Some of Louise's primary duties as PCO will include:
- hold precinct caucuses at certain selected times for the purpose of adopting resolutions and selecting delegates to legislative,
- county and state conventions,
- encourage the voters in her Precinct to register,
- getting the voters out in the Yelm area for both the '07 and '08 voting seasons,
- and support local Democratic candidates win their elections.

In that regard, expect to be hearing from Louise with the continuing call to let your voice be heard. Louise intends to hold local get-together's to give all who wish a chance to voice their wants and needs as it relates to the Democratic Party issues and policies. This will also help her to get to know her Precinct neighbors, and helps to make sure everyone is registered to vote in Precinct 702 #2, and an opportunity to participate and let their voices heard.

Congratulations on your appointment, Louise.
I, along with the Thurston County Democrats applaud your confirmation,
and look forward to working with you as we go forward into the '07 and '08 election cycles.

THURSTON COUNTY COMMISSIONER CANDIDATE ROMERO VISITS YELM

Thurston County Commissioner Candidate Sandra Romero visited Yelm on Wednesday, June 6th.
Twenty-Two people were in-audience to hear here stands on land use issues, unbridled building
with little regard for the infrastructure (roads, water resources, etc.) to keep up for the future, and
other hot-button issues for the County.

Bettye Johnson said this of the evening:

"I remember years ago... hearing something to the
effect that when you live in Caesar's land then you obey Caesar's
laws. If you don't like the laws - change them. Many of us have
attempted to change a few of the local laws and I know some
became disheartened and perhaps gave up or have chosen to
be inactive. I know, because I became one of the inactive ones.
However, there is a warrior within me and I can only be inactive
for a short time.
It was disheartening when Steve Klein ran for mayor of Yelm and
lost... Of course, the winning side claimed it
was a large margin. Steve ran an impeccable campaign and it
has now led him to still be vocal and he has a popular blog
that even the Yelm officials read.
We also have JeanMarie Christenson who ran for WA State Rep,
District 2 on the Democratic ticket. JeanMarie shocked the members
of the Democratic Party. She was a 'dark horse' and at one point she
was ahead. Unfortunately her opponent won by a small lead and she
accomplished what others thought was the impossible. She ran her
campaign impeccably and on a shoestring.
I am realizing that it is never too late unless one gives up. What I
am seeing is an awakening in the communities of Rainier, Tenino
and ever so slightly Yelm. Could this be from seeds planted over the
past 18 years? I would like to think so.
Last night (Wed., June 6) I attended the Meet and Greet meeting for Sandra Romero
sponsored by Steve Klein and JeanMarie Christenson. Sandra is running for
Thurston County Commissioner for the position Diane Oberquell is
relinquishing. Sandra was once [on the City Council] of Olympia and served in the
State Legislature for 12 years. She has a terrific track record.
Romero is an awesome lady. She is knowledgeable - powerful -
pro-environment - pro-people and so much, much more. I was enthralled to hear her
replies to questions. When she returns for another evening, I urge
you to attend and hear this great woman."

THURSTON COUNTY COMMISSIONER CANDIDATE COMING TO YELM FOR MEET & GREET

Thurston County Commissioner Candidate Sandra Romero

"Sandra Romero, candidate for Thurston County Commissioner (District 2), will be available to meet with voters at a Meet and Greet gathering at the historic Grange Hall in Yelm on June 6, from 7:00pm to 9:00 pm.

The event will provide opportunities for Sandra to hear about citizens’ concerns and for the community to get to know her and her qualifications for the post.

County Commissioners are the chief executives of the county and the legislative body of the county, and are charged with providing rural area services, such as roads, public safety and public health. They are also charged with regional responsibilities such as managing growth in a sensible manner.

Sandra Romero is a former State Representative who served the Lacey, Olympia and Tumwater areas for 12 years. While in the Legislature, she chaired the House Local Government Committee, was a leader in improving building codes and public contracting methods and worked extensively to ease the effects of extensive growth on our magnificent area.

As a member of the House Capital Budget Committee she helped secure funding for the award-winning Yelm sewer facility. As a member of the House Transportation Committee, she helped secure funding for the Yelm Bypass project and for the I-5 overpass of the regional Chehalis Western Trail which connects with south Thurston County regional trails.

Sandra and her husband, Fred, live in Lacey. They have two grown children. Their daughter Zoë works in the cruise ship industry. Their son Noel recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq with the National Guard, lives in Olympia with his wife and two young children, and works in information technology in state government," quoting Mrs. Romero's Press Release.

This Meet and Greet is co-sponsored by Jean Marie Christenson and Stephen Klein [host of this blog].

GUEST ENTRY - BETTYE JOHNSON ON HER VISIT TO CAPITOL HILL

Jean Marie Christenson, Rep. Adam Smith & Bettye Johnson

A VIEW FROM THE HILL

Last week I flew to Washington D.C. to attend Congressman Adam Smith’s 2007 Ninth District Day, held on May 17. I had no expectations other than this was a new adventure for me – stepping outside of my box. The breakfast/meeting/lunch began at 8:30 a.m. in the House Caucus Room in the Cannon House Building. There were approximately 150 of us attending this speaker meeting. Briefly I will list the names of the speakers and I was pleasantly surprised with the people Smith selected. Smith serves on the Armed Services Committee and is chairman of the Anti-Terrorism sub-committee. The following were the speakers with a brief description. The Washington State Ninth District encompasses Yelm, Rainier, Tacoma and parts of Pierce County.

*-Senator Patty Murray spoke on the shortcomings of the VA to take care of returning service personnel and many with severe mental disabilities. She also addressed the concerns of governors of many states regarding the National Guard who have been sent to Iraq for more than one tour of duty and when they return, their equipment remains in Iraq. The governors realize their states are vulnerable when it comes to disasters. I wondered why she voted to extend the Iraqi war and will send her an email.

*-Senator Maria Cantwell who was late in arriving and spoke for seven minutes spoke on working for fewer tax breaks for the oil industry and more for alternative energy and energy efficiency. I also wondered why she voted to extend the Iraq war and am sending her an email addressing this.

*-President and CEO of In-Q-Tel, an investment company for the C.I.A. whose purpose is to seek out new and innovative technology from all over the world. One can draw her/his own conclusions.

*-Vice Admiral Eric Olsoni, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command, which was created about 8 years ago to bring under one umbrella all branches of the military, including the Coast Guard, the ‘covert’ operations segments of each branch. The most important thing I learned is that there are ‘covert’ personnel in 54 different countries and I have an idea that most of these countries are predominantly of the Muslim faith.

*- Rep. Rahm Emanuel, Chicago and Chairman of the Democratic Caucus. His job is to assess the pluses and minuses of the Democratic Party. He stated that in the last election there were 30 women nationwide running for office and all were eligible and had financial backing. They all lost. His assessment is that the mindset of the voters concerned about illegal aliens/immigration is that women would be too soft and give in to welfare, food stamps, and medical coverage.

*-Chuck Todd, Political Director and On-Air Analyst for NBC News. Most important statement he made was regarding the Republican Party: The Republicans think this is a World War against Muslims.

*-Bruce Hoffman, Professor at Georgetown University whose expertise is terrorism. The Al Aquida works in small cells with a 3-prong agenda: Change/Adjust/Overcome. This includes the Muslim world. U.S. has failed because of using an established mind-set towards the Iraqis. The U.S. will never win the war in Iraq and needs a new paradigm/strategy. The insurgents will always find a way around technology. U.S. needs more communication components to counteract hate.

*-Mark Warner, former Governor of Virginia. A brilliant statesman who inherited a deficit of $6 billion when he took office. Four years later, he left office with Virginia having a surplus. He used innovative methods. Warner impressed me with his assessment of the world situation. He is pro-environment and travels now all over the world. The world has moved beyond Iraq and he is being asked what is America doing about global warming. He said that the U.S. has lost its set of values. Suggest going to his website.

*-Dr. Susan E. Rice, Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies, Brookings Institute. She is a brilliant woman whose emphasis is ending world hunger and poverty. She said that values and security need to be brought into alignment.

My assessment is that Smith is drawing people to him that he can learn from or can advise him. I was impressed with his selection of speakers. I gained a different perspective. There is a spark of hope and I encourage the use of emails to express one’s views to our national representatives and also to our state representatives.

Congratulations Jean Marie on a valiant effort. To give all in service of your fellow citizens is a path few choose.
We are all better for Jean Marie stepping out for us and giving us a choice, even though she is behind in the vote count!
Thank you...

We are all more aware of the issues facing our district because of you. With Rep. McCune representing us for another term, we need to keep the ideas you brought to this campaign in the forefront.

Editor,

I am writing as I have observed you to say you are intent on providing balanced reporting for your readers.

Therefore, I am sure that you would wish to let your readers know that there are current and non-current students in Ramtha's School of Enlightenment that use the knowledge they have been taught in RSE in their lives everyday and are proud to say so, in contrast to your two front-page stories, beginning with the Sept. 22 article titled "Life after RSE focus of meeting Sunday."

The following students are just some of the names that were in the media in recent weeks that would provide your reporters plenty of material to present a balanced report, all have called this area home.

Further, I understand your reporters are always looking for stories of interest on which to present to your readers, so there is plenty of material here.

DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR THIS LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT MAKING INROADS

This from the Democratic Candidate's campaign:

"Jean Marie Christenson has advanced from the September 19th Primary to be the official Democratic Party candidate for State Representative District #2, Position #1 in the General Election on November 7, 2006.

This election is a mail-in ballot for 100% of the voters in Thurston County, and 70% of the voters in Pierce County.

Absentee ballots will be mailed to all voters on October 18th, and 80% of the voters that will vote in this election will have marked their ballots by October 24th, two full weeks before the election.

Although her vote totals in the Primary were impressive, delivering votes in the General Election is a must if Jean Maire is to unseat the incumbent.

These next two weeks are crucial.

Therefore, won't you please join Jean Marie, and her team, in a sign-making party at the "Old General Store Steakhouse & Saloon Restaurant" in Roy on Saturday morning, Oct. 14 at 10am? Breakfast will be provided for everyone by "The Campaign to Elect Jean Marie Christenson."

Then teams will head out to distribute the signs, go doorbelling, and do sign-waving throughtout the district. This will be the last team gathering in this campaign before the election. The time is now.

If you would like a sign for your yard, please contact Jean Marie's campaign at (360) 446-5620."

It's about the future!

THIS WRITER ENDORSES JEAN MARIE CHRISTENSON AS REP.

Former Yelm Mayoral Candidate Steve Klein formally endorses Jean Marie Christenson for State Representative, District 2, Position 1.

Ms. Christenson has demonstrated her passion, energy, and focus in bringing this District's dynamic growth to the forefront, highlighting what was once considered a backwater rural constituency into the mainstream of this State's issues.

Jean Marie, an ardent advocate for education, has personally embraced undergraduate and graduate studies. A former teacher herself, Jean Marie is currently a student at the District 2, Yelm-based, Ramtha's School of Enlightenment (RSE). She is stepping forward to serve her fellow citizens in bringing about change and awareness on a whole host of topics that focus on this area's future. Jean Marie is upsetting the status-quo by challenging the old ways of thinking in district and State politics.

Jean Marie will enter the Primary election on September 19 as the only Democrat running for State Representative of District 2 in Position 1. Congratulations, Ms. Christenson.

"Our vote in the Primary election remains vital, as many elections are won or lost in the Primary even if your candidate is the only one running from your Party. Candidates must receive an impressive percentage of the votes to be considered viable contenders and worthy to receive endorsements. Endorsements are very important to a campaign, as they equate to huge numbers of votes and substantial funding. Therefore, your vote for Jean Marie Christenson on September 19 is still very important," quoting Ms. Christenson.

If you live in Thurston County, you will automatically receive a mail-in ballot. If you live in Pierce County, you will need to request an absentee ballot for the Primary. And remember, you must be registered to vote at least 30 days before the election.

Won't you join me in electing a woman who will utilize her unique talents in representing us in Olympia?

Steve Klein

DEMOCRATIC PARTY'S CANDIDATE FOR STATE REP. DISTRICT 2, POSITION 1 ANNOUNCED

Dear Friends,

When I filed with the Public Disclosure Commission 3 months ago, on May 1st, indicating my decision to run for State Representative I was told by several of the Power Structure, the movers-and-shakers in the Democratic Party I would never be endorsed. You and I kept our focus.

I entered the race without financial backing, I had no previous experience, and I was a student in Ramtha's School. I was told, "Three strikes, you're out." You and I kept our focus.

Chairman, Committee Officer, Representative and Senator, told me to get out. They would not endorse me because I could not over come these obstacles. You and I kept our focus.

Last Sunday evening, July 30th, the 2nd Legislative District Committee voted unanimously to endorse Jean Marie Christenson as their Candidate for State Representative in District 2. The Thurston County Democrats had already voted unanimously to offer their services. You and I kept our focus.

Additionally, the very same folks who said it couldn't happen were at a party Sunday evening celebrating the one Candidate who had already won the Primary Election for the Democratic Party by entering the Primary Election unopposed by any other Democrat!! That Candidate is Jean Marie Christenson. You and I kept our focus.

Today I am pleased to announce to you:

Jean Marie Christenson is the Democratic Party's Candidate for State Representative in District 2, Position 1, and has already WON the Primary Election!

I know that you and I will keep our focus.

Thank you.

GUEST ENTRY FROM CANDIDIATE FOR STATE REPRESENTATIVE

Dear Readers,

This writer sent an invitation to the two announced candidates for State Representative, District 2, Position 1, which includes this area to present their stands to all of you in depth, since the September 19 Primary is closing fast:
The incumbant Rep. Jim McCune (R)

The challenger Jean Marie Christenson (D)

To date, only Ms. Christenson has responded to the request. Her statement to the Yelm Community Blog is below, unabridged in any way and in its entirety. This writer hopes Rep. McCune will share his vision with all of you, as well.

Dear Steve Klein and Voters,

Thank you for your invitation to be a guest on your Blog, and congratulations on the great reviews your Blog has been receiving!

As a resident and voter in District 2, I would like to thank you for your willingness to put yourself out there. As a Candidate for State Representative for District 2, I thank you for your participation in the political process, and for always encouraging others to do the same.

Additionally, I would feel remiss if I did not say, “Bravo, Mr. Klein” for your direct influence in the passing of Senate Bill 6323 which requires all candidates raising more than $5,000 file a public disclosure report …regardless of the city's population.

I have personally felt this sort of legislation has been way over-do, and now because of your direct influence the citizens in our State will be protected from a loophole that had allowed candidates in smaller jurisdictions to raise and spend unreported money. “Bravo, Mr. Klein. Bravo!”

With the upcoming very important September 19th Primary, the Campaign to elect Jean Marie Christenson is going full speed ahead. Campaign press releases will be going to all our District’s newspapers the first week in August.

We have a wonderful crew of volunteers and welcome everyone to participate. The Campaign to Elect Jean Marie Christenson’s wonderful Volunteer Coordinator, Jennifer Braun and I invite anyone who would like to support this incredible campaign to come aboard. You can contact Jennifer at quantummonad@hotmail.com

or phone her at: (360) 446-5623.

Out on the Campaign trail I am often asked to share something about my own life.

Well, I am a lifelong Washington resident, born in Spokane, and grew up in Wenatchee. I am the mother of a grown son, and my home is in Rainier, Washington.

Growing up in a rural community meant that I went to work in local orchards at a young age. Picking fruit in orchards, and packing fruit in the local packing sheds, along with income from my parent’s farm and cattle ranch, I was able to earn enough money for a good education, and I subsequently pursued a career as a counselor, both in private practice, and as a teacher of motivational seminars.

I have always held the belief that we should give back to our communities, and with that belief I made sure to find time to donate my services as a counselor to youth-at-risk, as a foster mother, and in the psychiatric department of the hospital at Washington State Reformatory. My experiences at the Reformatory led to my published book, The Keepers and the Caged.

My background has given me the life experiences that allow me to understand how to get something of value accomplished. In order for District 2 to have the sort of considerations it deserves, we must elect someone who is not afraid to stand up, challenge the status-quo, and be heard.

District 2 is known as the “abandoned child” of the State, and it is about time someone has the courage to say so, and declare, “We deserve considerably more attention, respect, and funding!”

If the current popular consensus is that District 2, a rural district, is not that important, I would say, “Where do you think the food you are going to eat for your dinner came from? I will tell you, ‘It came from a farm or a ranch!’”

I am committed to success for District 2, and hold a strong focus for the creation of jobs, protecting the environment, pursuing alternative energy resources, encouraging economic vitality for our farmers, supporting our educators and schools, and requiring accountability for our taxpayers’ dollars.

I ask you to please vote in the upcoming Primary Election on September 19th. Many political races are won or lost in the Primary Election!

You do not have to register by Party, but in order to vote you must be registered by August 19th.

September 19th ... Primary Election:

You will receive 2 Ballots for the Primary Election. One will be Democrat ... and the other Republican. You must choose which Ballot you wish to vote on, and may only vote on one-or-the other! This is the case only for the Primary Election. No one will know which you choose. (In the General Election you will be able to cross Party lines.)

Please remember to vote for your Candidate in the Primary Election!

Thank you again, Mr. Klein, for this opportunity to address the voters of District 2.

And I would remind all the voters that even if you think you may not be interested in politics, that does not mean politics is not interested in you!

It’s about the future, now.

Jean Marie Christenson, Candidate for State Representative, District 2, Position 1
