WETTEST MONTH RECORD JUST SHY OF BEING BROKEN IN OLYMPIA

"Olympia's total November precipitation will fall just short of the record books. As of midnight Thursday, 19.67 inches of rain had fallen at Olympia Regional Airport in November. That was just short of Olympia's record for monthly precipitation - at least going back to 1948, when weather observations began being measured there, said National Weather Service meteorologist Johnny Burg. The wettest month that has been recorded at Olympia Airport was in January 1953, when there were 19.84 inches of precipitation," quoting The Olympian.

However, Seattle did record the wettest month in history:
"By 9:30 p.m. [Wed. Nov. 29] precipitation had broken the one-month record for Seattle, 15.33 inches set in December 1933, when the official reporting station was at the old downtown Federal Building. By about 10 p.m., the November precipitation total at the current station, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, stood at 15.45 inches, National Weather Service meteorologist Doug McDonnal said. The rain total climbed to 15.63 inches by early Thursday morning. Earlier, the weather service reported a record low of 18 degrees at the airport, breaking the old mark for Nov. 29 of 22 degrees set in 1985. Other record lows included 12 degrees at Bellingham, near the Canadian border; 25 degrees in Hoquiam near the coast, and 2 degrees below zero at Pullman in the southeast corner of the state," quoting KOMO TV4.

Disney-themed 737, adorned with image of wish-granting Genie character, will fly six “wish children” from Pacific Northwest to Disneyland Resort on inaugural flight (Nov. 17).

Alaska Airlines... introduced its “Spirit of Make-A-Wish” aircraft, adorned with the image of the wish-granting Genie from Disney’s “Aladdin” and the Make-A-Wish Foundation® logo, to a group of eager Make-A-Wish children at Seattle-TacomaInternationalAirport. The uniquely painted Boeing 737-400 celebrates the long-term partnership between the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Alaska Airlines and Disneyland Resorts to make wishes come true for sick children," quoting Make-A-Wish.

AREA'S CHRISTMAS TREES SHIPPED TO THE WORLD

The Business Examiner of the South Sound ran a terrific story about our area's Christmas Trees being shipped all over the world. Here are some facts as presented in their article titled Holiday Harvest:
"From field to foreign:

- Trees are ordered in the fall and planted early in the year. Depending on the variety, trees take between eight and 20 years to mature into a 6-foot tree.

- Trees slated for South Pacific ports such as Hawaii are harvested three weeks before they are scheduled to arrive on the lots.

- Before they leave South Sound farms, the trees are taken to an on-site farm processing yard by helicopter sling or transport truck to be shaken and inspected. The trees are then baled and loaded into refrigerated cargo containers, where the temperature is dropped to freezing to slow the tree’s death.

- The trees are driven to shipping ports in Washington and Oregon where they make the several-day journey oversees. Retailers in Hawaii often display just a few trees at a time from the containers in order to keep the trees fresh.

Washington trees at a glance:

-25,000 acres of trees are tended to by 300 growers.

-2.3 million trees are expected to be harvested this year and will bring in an estimated $51 million in wholesale retail dollars.

- Counties with the greatest production include Kitsap, Lewis, Mason and Thurston

-92 percent of trees exported, with California being the largest market.

-Oversees and foreign markets include Japan, China, Hong Kong, Philippines, Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, Guam and Puerto Rico.

-Major destinations include California (47 percent); other western states (11 percent); Gulf states (9 percent); Mexico (13 percent); and Atlantic states (2 percent).

YELM'S LEMURIA SHOWCASES LOCAL ARTISANS

When the Ramtha School of Enlightenment (RSE) was first established in Yelm in 1988, Mail Unlimited (MU) was opened in its present location by a woman making services available for the people moving here to be students. She received their mail and established a phone service.
In 1995, she sold Mail Unlimited to Fran White, who renamed this store Lemuria and has carried on the tradition of MU, expanding by doubling the floor space to include books, gifts, clothing and other services such as FedEx, UPS, photocopy machines, and interesting videos for rent. Lemuria is also a great place to drop off a letter or package for patrons for a very small fee to be held for pick-up.
Ms. White has also been the first to support the crafts of RSE students.
Customers can walk into this enchanted shop to find students' books, artwork, soaps, jewelry, candles, clothing plus other goods too numerous to list. When you are in Yelm, visit this magical Lemuria and say hello to Fran White and Yienan Song, her customer services representative. If you can't find what you want, they will be most happy to assist you in fulfilling your requests.
This is one of Yelm's treasures. Lemuria is located on 1st Ave. across from the Yelm City Park.
Call 458-2699 for a list of weekly artisans.
Coming, Saturday, December 9th:
11am-1pm Myra K. Hansen - Author of GRANDMA'S GOD

1pm-3pm Marilee Wallace - Wool spinning sheppardess

3pm-5pm Amber R. Wiltsie - Author of RAMTHA AND ME

We are located next to the Dollar Up store in the Sunbirds-QFC Complex. Our name is SIMPLY HEAVEN.

SIMPLY HEAVEN

Christmas time is here again.
Sigh! Sigh! Sigh! is what we hear.
Can this be delight at the Time of Year?
No, it's the whisper of shoppers' fear!

Where, in all this land about
Can one find a store that has it all,
With gifts unique that bring delight
And do not make your savings pall?

Has no-one told you of a place called Simply Heaven?
New in Yelm, 'a gift from above'!
It's the store you've long been dreaming of,
And it is filled with gifts of joy and love.

So this Christmas be one of the Wise
And shop in Heaven - akin to Paradise.
And you'll be pleased to find the store
Where shopping is fun instead of a chore.

Where is this wondrous place you ask?
To find us is not a hard task . . .
We're right next door to Dollar Up.
Now Santa's been - so hurry up!

But you will find the best time to call

Dear Readers;

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you in the USA & around the World who read this blog!
We ALL have much for which to be thankful, wherever you reside.
I sincerely thank all of you for your interest in local stories printed here.
The numbers of "daily visitors" indicate there is an ever-increasing interest in this blog.
For that, I am grateful. And all by word of mouth with little advertising.
Even the local newspaper publisher wrote me and quoted from Yelm's first community blog,
indicating he reads these pages as well!

This is a fascinating look at the History of the American Thanksgiving from the History Channel. May you & your family be blessed with health, joy & laughter this holiday season!

NEW MILESTONE REACHED IN WESTERN WASHINGTON

"It's the wettest November in Western Washington on record. But now we have also reached a new milestone: wettest month ever.

KING 5 meteorologist Jeff Renner said Sea-Tac Airport recorded the record for wettest month at 5:53 p.m. Tuesday at 12.94". By 10 p.m., the number was up to 13.05". The previous records was recorded at 12.92" in January 1953,"
quoting KING-5 News.

Olympia Regional Airport recorded 16.57 inches of rain as of 11:59pm November 21, breaking the preivous November all-time record of 15.51 inches set in 1962. January, 1953 marks Olympia's wettest month in history at 19.84 inches.

YELM EARTHWORM & CASTINGS FARM

"The YELM Earthworm & Castings Farm is one of the largest worm farms in North America. We are dedicated to soil conservation, restoration and improvement. The farm began operating in the mid-1980s as a mushroom farm. It was redeveloped as a worm farm in 1990 and was revitalized in 1997 through new management. We have excellent facilities, including more than 30,000 sq. ft. of enclosed production space and well water. The farm is full of charm, including our farm office housed in an old-time rail caboose.
We use time-tested, proven methods to grow large quanities of redworms (Eisenia fetida). The redworms are grown with solids-separated dairy manure and gathered using a two-step mechanical/hand sorting harvesting process. We are a full-time, full-service commercial redworm farm. We provide redworms for all types and sizes of projects for gardeners, home composters, farmers, institutions, and entreprenuers.
Visiting the Yelm Earthworm and Castings Farm...

Hours: (subject to change)
The Yelm Earthworm & Castings Farm and the Soil Building Depot is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm.," quoting their site.

GUEST ENTRY - ALTERNATIVE ENERGY PLAN FOR THE NISQUALLY WATERSHED

I am working on a framework to implement the goals of the I-937 initiative for renewable energy in the Nisqually River watershed. I have been authorized by the Executive Committee of the Nisqually River Council to do research on their behalf. I need help in establishing a core group that would assist with volunteer time for that research and
legwork in preparing an action proposal to present to the Nisqually River Council in March 2007.

I have been working with Ohop Mutual Light Company, Eatonville, encouraging them to establish an alternative and sustainable energy incentive program for cooperative members. In addition I have been discussing with the leadership of the Nisqually River Council the idea of establishing a watershed-wide program to implement intensive energy conservation practices, and solar and wind energy production. These conversations have more urgency with the apparent passage of I-937 and the reality of global warming or climate change. I don't believe there is an implementing strategy for I-937, and it will fall on the backs of Washington utility organizations. Therefore, local communities should step up and organize for their collective future.
Here are some ideas:

-Develop a renewable energy and conservation element with 50-year vision, goals, objectives and actions for the Nisqually Watershed Stewardship Plan.
-Sponsor a renewable energy summit among the electrical utilities and interested others that operate within the Nisqually River Watershed (WRIA 11--Portions of Thurston, Pierce and Lewis Counties) for the purpose of collaboratively establishing goals and timelines.
-Define and encourage business and economic opportunities that establish solar and wind equipment manufacturing, assembly and installation and energy conservation within the watershed (possibly part of the summit).
-Develop a model partnership with a local electrical utility, such as Ohop Mutual, that implements existing renewable energy incentives.
-Include watershed-wide transportation goals that implement alternative fuels.

The Nisqually River Council is a locally-based management partnership of state and local governments, businesses and individuals. Their goal is to steward the Nisqually River watershed-its people, its businesses, its economy, its tourism, its wildlife habitat, and its water sources-in a sustainable manner. The Council operates within the framework of their Nisqually Watershed Stewardship Plan that can be downloaded from this website, www.nisquallyriver.org

It is my belief that with good planning and modest investments, the Nisqually River Watershed can go well beyond the mandate of I-937 and become a net producer of green energy.

Thank you for any help you can provide in moving this project forward.

This writer and his wife went to Yelm Cinemas last night to see the landmark film,

This is a MUST see for all Americans AND Canadians!

Showing for two more days at Yelm Cinemas.

CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD - THE MOVIE COMES TO YELM!

Yelm Cinemas Theater Manager Howard Christian has done it again!
Per your requests, he has scheduled for the landmark film, "Conversations With God" beginning Friday, November 17th. Be sure to spread the word and show support to Yelm Cinemas so they will get more films of this caliber. Check theater listings for show times (to be posted 11/14). Warning: This is NOT a comfortable film to see here in America, yet a necessity for all Americans to see what is happening in our country.
Now, thanks to Yelm Cinemas, you and your friends & family can see this film right here at home!

And remember, the Future of Food is currently playing at Yelm Cinemas.

EGYPT ARTIFACTS EXHIBIT IN PORTLAND

Another great weekend jaunt:
"This is the largest group of artifacts from Egypt ever to tour North America!"

'Explore the ornately conceived afterworld of the ancient Egyptians through a magnificent array of sculpture, jewelry, sarcophagi, and other masterpieces of funerary art. At 107 objects — many never seen outside of Egypt — it’s a world of gods, goddesses, magical beasts, spells, myths, royal tombs, pharaohs, and princesses," quoting the Portland (OR) Art Museum.

DID YOU KNOW YELM HAS A FOOD CO-OP?

"A food co-op is a grocery store run by the community for the community. People who shop regularly are encouraged to become members. Members make decisions regarding all aspects of the business, including products sold. Members also enjoy purchases at a discounted price. The Yelm Food Co-op is a non-profit organization. The Yelm Food Co-op plans to carry organic products [i.e. organic turkeys offered for sale at Thanksgiving], as well as products from local farmers who use sustainable production practices.

Private businesses concentrate all of the gains and all of the risk onto one person or partnership. In contrast, a cooperative spreads
the responsibilities and benefits around.

By opening a cooperative, it is possible to create an asset for the whole community. Not only will the co-op be democratically
controlled, but also the fruits of financial success will be available to use as the members see fit. A surplus may be allocated as
dividends to members, donations for community groups, or even set aside to help open other cooperatives.

Cooperatives are part of a growing social movement towards a more democratic economy. They keep money in
the community, and make it much more difficult for business interests to come in and dominate the market. Co-ops provide a way for you and your neighbors to work together, to meet your needs and deal with issues facing your community," quoting the Yelm Food Co-Op.

LINDA EVANS CONTINUES TO BRING ATTENTION TO YELM & RSE

Area resident and noted television actress Linda Evans is touring the country on-stage with Joan Collins in LEGENDS! This writer continues to be amazed that the media on each stop prints her affiliation with Ramtha's School of Enlightenment in Yelm, where previously none would. This is a grand & welcome change. LEGENDS!
was touring in Hartford, Ct. last week. What Linda is doing to inspire women in their 60's is fantastic. Quoting CT Now from November 5th:
"When the series wrapped in 1989, 'I sort of retired and decided to have this wonderful life.' She bought a villa ... on a lake in Washington, where she felt free to do what she pleased. She ... pursued spiritual growth at Ramtha's School of Enlightenment in rural Yelm, Wash. 'I had so much fun. I was like a kid, breaking out, staying up late, drinking, doing - and gaining weight' - 25 pounds, much to her surprise. 'I never varied 4 pounds in my entire life,'she says. (She is back to her svelte frame again.)."

LEGENDS! opens in East Lansing, MI this week.

YELM LOSING KEY JOBS

As this writer predicted, once the dust settles from the merger of Yelm Telephone (Ycom Networks) into Fairpoint Communications, many of the local faces there will be axed. The Nisqually Valley News reported just that in their November 3, 2006 edition saying that 11 of the 42 people in Yelm will be on lay-off effective December 20.

Further, the LASCO Bathware plant "laid-off one third of its workforce in Yelm on Oct. 5th." LASCO will now be staying in Yelm and is expected to have met EPA requirements in the first quarter of 2007 eliminating 95% of emissions, saying the Yelm plant is now profitable. The lay-offs are the result of a downturn in demand due to slower housing starts.

Wal-Mart will soon be taking applications for its Yelm Superstore, expected to open in Spring, 2007...

VALIANT EFFORT JEAN MARIE CHRISTENSON

Congratulations Jean Marie on a valiant effort. To give all in service of your fellow citizens is a path few choose.
We are all better for Jean Marie stepping out for us and giving us a choice, even though she is behind in the vote count!
Thank you...

We are all more aware of the issues facing our district because of you. With Rep. McCune representing us for another term, we need to keep the ideas you brought to this campaign in the forefront.

NISQUALLY RIVER CHANGES RENEW LIFE

"It has been 30 years since the last of the native run of Nisqually River chinook salmon returned to spawn in the river...

The wild run of king salmon fell victim to overharvest. Hatchery fish overwhelmed them. They lost their spawning habitat to development and clear-cut forests. And with two dams on the river, their need for cool, adequate water supplies was not always met.

'For several months out of the year, it wouldn't be uncommon for entire sections of the Nisqually River to run dry,' said David Troutt, tribal natural resources director. 'The dams also released a deluge of water in the winter after the wild chinook had spawned, scouring out their eggs.'

It's a common tale played out across Puget Sound, helping to explain why Puget Sound chinook landed on the federal Endangered Species Act list as a threatened species in 1999.

But much has changed along the 78-mile-long river, which begins as melting glacier water high on the flanks of Mount Rainier and ends its downstream journey at the Nisqually Delta, one of the premier river estuaries in the Northwest and home to Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge," quoting The Olympian.

"The Nisqually River Delta is where the action is when it comes to estuary restoration work in Puget Sound.

Just last month, the Nisqually tribe welcomed back the saltwater to a 100-acre expanse of pasture land that hadn't seen the tides flow in and out since it was diked for agricultural use more than 100 years ago.

On the other side of the river, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is poised to pull back similar dikes to restore 700 acres of estuary in the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge," quoting The Olympian.

GUEST ENTRY - SIGN ORDINANCE ENFORCEMENT QUESTIONED

With the election campaign season we all have been subject to signs on private and public property from supporters of the candidates. Businesses in Yelm operate with restrictions regarding signage including sandwich boards.

Within the last year or so, OW Dash, a used book store located on First Avenue South, had a tempestuous fight with the city of Yelm for putting a sandwich board by the curb to attract customers. She was told to stop. She then parked her car by the roadside and put the same board on the roof of her car. Eventually she desisted all together. Seeing a “going out of business sign” now displayed at OW Dash reminded me of her story.

I called Yelm City Hall this past week to speak to the person in charge of signage, whose name, forgive me, I never asked. I questioned him if he recollected the case of OW Dash. He didn't respond. I informed him of the case and asked him if the two sandwich boards that I saw 45 minutes ago at the original stoplight in town belonging to Quadrant Homes [Tahoma Meadow subdivision], played by the same rules. He agreed right away they do. I added that I have seen these signs for months now scattered around town, and consistently on the corner of Yelm Highway and Longmire. Had he never seen these signs around town I questioned. He replied no. I asked if big signs on private property come under some signage limitations. He said they do if they are within city limits. I added that Yelm stands to make a lot of money for its coffers fining Quadrant Homes for all their signs scattered around the city. He said he'll look into it.

Today I again was in town and counted four different developments whose signs are either sandwich boards or posters stapled to sticks stuck in the ground. City signage rules apply to all equally; retail, church, special events and developments. We don’t have to engage such eyesores that litter our sidewalks to help Quadrant Homes or any other party with their sales campaign.

YELM GETS NATIONAL RECOGNITION IN LINDA EVANS' INTERVIEWS

Linda Evans' play LEGENDS! opened in Philly last week with her press interviews all quoting her participation in Ramtha's School of Enlightenment in Yelm. In the past, the media has omitted this fact from their printed stories.
The Philadelphia Daily News says:
"...But instead of letting that be the ruin of her as it is with so many other entertainers, she began a journey inward, facilitated largely by a controversial school she attends in the Pacific Northwest called Ramtha's School of Enlightment (sic) in Yelm, Wash. It helped her put things into perspective such as aging and surviving in a cut-throat industry that values looks and youth above everything."
The Delaware County Times:
"...In her personal life, Evans opts for a quieter, more spiritual existence. Rather than live in the vicinity of Hollywood, she has chosen to live in a villa on a lake in Washington State, near a school with with she’s been associated for a while, the Raamtha (sic) School of Enlightenment...."
